Some lighter fare

This past weekend was a rough one.  After posting about waiting for so long to be parents, we found out we did not receive the much desired signature, and now we will have to wait through the month of July as the courts are on a holiday.  This means we will miss being with our son on his birthday this weekend.  Please keep us all in your prayers- life is hard right now.  Sometimes Facebook and Instagram can be like a sucker punch in the stomach, so I needed to take a break this week.  But I’m back.

I don’t want to dwell on the bad stuff right now, though.  So I thought I would share some stuff that’s put a smile on my face lately.  This post is heavy on music videos, so I hope you don’t mind.

  • I grew up listening to country music during my formative years, so maybe that’s why I still love listening to country music from the ’80’s and ’90’s.  The artists from that decade are like family to me- Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Reba McIntyre, Garth Brooks.  A friend once said (in my presence) that Dolly Parton was a horrible singer- BLASPHEMY!!  How can you listen to Islands in the Stream or watch a Smokey Mountain Christmas without smiling? How, I ask you?  One of my favorite artists, though, is Randy Travis.  Recently Sl0@n sent me this link of the Avett Brothers covering one of his (Randy’s, not Sl0@n’s) songs (double shout out to NC).  I love everything about this video!

  • I have loved listening to Joy Williams all the way back to her CCM days.  I don’t know any other artist who has been able to re-invent themselves multiple times and always be great. Remember when Garth came out with his alter ego Chris Gaines?

It’s actually gotten creepier over the past 15 years.  Inspiration behind Blue Steel?  I read an article stating he does not regret this career decision.  Hmm. . .

But I digress. . .

I’m sad I missed out seeing Civil Wars (talk about a prophetic name) in concert, but I’m glad she’s still putting out great music.  Her newest album Venus does not disappoint.  I wouldn’t call it a fun and light, but it meets me where I am.

  • Tuesday night one of my friends from high school was on America’s Got Talent!  It was surreal seeing someone from back home on national television.  Benton gave an awesome performance (and the judges agreed)!

So those are a few light, enjoyable things in this difficult season.  Here’s Dolly to sing us out.

With His love,
